A new graphic representation mapping the number of Internet users by country and the percentage of each country’s population actually online in 2013 has been produced by the Oxford Internet Institute – and we think the results make for interesting viewing.

The global map is distorted so that the size of each country reflects its absolute number of Internet users, while shading indicates the share of its population that has Internet access. A quick glance at the map data reveals that very few of the world’s largest Internet-using countries have penetration above 80% – and of those, the UK has the second highest level. The data perhaps makes it easier to appreciate why analysts are predicting that online retail sales in the UK will reach reach £52.25bn this year.

You can find out all the fascinating detail by taking a closer look at Oxford Internet Institute’s map and accompanying commentary here
